It's also interesting and potentially really fun. Its purpose is to introduce you to three types of literature--narrative, poetry, and drama-as well as the genre of writing about literature. The course also immerses you in the Humanities: the exploration of what it means to be human; what it means to have the history, language, and psychology we have; and what it means to try to understand experiences both familiar and strange to us precisely because they are human. Required Text: Meyer, The Bedford Introduction to Literature A good collegiate dictionary Required Work , All Six Components Equally Averaged into Final Grade Paper #1: Analysis of a Short Story Midterm Paper #2: Poetry Analysis Paper #3 Drama Analysis Final Exam Quizzes/Participation Participation: includes your homework and in-class attitude and activities. I do not offer extra credit, and class moves fast, so your best bet is to try your best on everything we do and don't miss class. Attendance: The absence policy is simple: you may miss up to 3 class times without it affecting your final grade. After 3 unexcused absences, you may not pass. If you miss class, it is up to you to get the missed information from classmates. Paper Policies: All final papers must be typed and submitted with drafts attached. If you miss a peer edit for a paper, the final grade is reduced by 1/3. No late papers will be accepted. Conferences: You will be required to meet with me at least twice this term: once before Paper #1 is due and once before Paper #3 is due. Beyond these two required meetings, you can make appointments to see me at any time during the term or see me during posted office hours. Help Is Available! English 100 is a university-transfer course. University-level work is demanding. I strongly recommend that every student in English 100 register for the GWC Writing Center. For about eight dollars, you get access to computers, writing and grammar software, and English instructors to coach you as you learn new writing skills. It's also just a great place to study on campus. ENGLISH 110- FALL 2000 SYLLABUS Note: Any reading listed next to a date is due on that date.
